Tech entrepreneurs often gather once a week in a cozy place to grab some coffee, free Wi-Fi, and chat about what’s new. One thing I have heard repeatedly is it is hard or impossible to pitch investors who barely know me. What are investors looking for in a pitch and how to secure “funding” from an investor that best fits my goal?

The book Applebees America, says that the basis of an effective conversation is to have a thorough understanding of the organization and the communications environment, including the audiences and other players. It is impossible to know whether an investor will be interested in my product. But I need to be fully prepared the key message for every email and presentations. Generally, business owners will open a window of 15 minutes for an initial pitch. Please remember don’t talk about how my product works. Try to tell my investors how I will make money with them if my product is actually working. In the meantime, the messages need to be clear and concise when I start communicating with the potential investor. Take a minute to think what I expect the investor to describe my business concept and progress to a partner in his or her firm.

Which tactics do I need for an initial pitch? Firstly, I will be armed with a comprehensive business plan with a well-defined marketing strategy and fancy tactics. It is a starter to stimulate the appetite of the investor. But in order to nail a deal down, I will use up my enthusiasm and passion to introduce the product. But don’t forget to focus on the Money.

Anticipate questions inventors might ask. How large is your market? Who are your competitors? Why is your product better than what is already in the market? What is your customer acquisition strategy? How much money have you made? Answer these with a cool, calm tongue. It is a platform to test the entrepreneur’s capabilities under high pressure.

A PowerPoint presentation using about 12 slides is standard, particularly with a tech product. Had better to show a demo to investors so they can see how it could actually work. If you can demonstrate your product or hand out product samples that’s a plus. Discuss actual sales or anticipated orders. Also, this is where your research on testing or proving your business concept comes into play, which includes results from surveys, focus groups, and product tests to show any customer insight you have gained.

Last but not the least, the more you pitch, the more you get a sense for what parts of your pitch resonate with investors. Keep the parts that work and ditch the parts that don’t. Keep iterating until you nail it.

Hackathons are a long week tech events where IT programmers, Web designers, R&D professionals and business persons collaborate on specific projects. Like D.C.WEEK 2012, it brought together groups of tech’s brightest and most enthusiastic. People who participate in and attend D.C.WEEK are eager to introduce their innovation with passion, and the most importance is they are doing it for free.

So what is the tech start-up’s benefit to launch a Hackathon? It is essential to establish a relationship between Hackathons and start-up tech companies. Hackathons are a great place to meet fascinating people and make and foster meaningful professional and personal relationships. If tech start-ups want to recruit a professional to develop a new project, Hackathons must be a best way for the companies to seek and achieve the brilliants and maintain those essential connections with other participants for future projects. Every Hackathon after the first is like going to a reunion with people you actually like. It is said that one should “work hard and play hard.” A hackathon is the only event where you’re doing both at the same time.

Today marks the 100th anniversary of Richard Nixon’s birth. Nixon was an imperfect messenger and a tormented genius, yet he successfully guided the nation through perhaps the most tumultuous era since the Civil War. Nixon went to China–an achievement so singularly brilliant that it is almost cliche to mention it. In doing so he not only secured the balance of power for decades, but he also lifted China out of its status as a rogue state and ensured that, while we would come to compete with the Chinese, it would be economically rather than militarily. I could not be in China today if it weren’t for Nixon.

Reagan gets a lot of credit from the right for his policy towards the Soviets, but it was Nixon who established meaningful dialogue with the USSR, signed the first meaningful arms reduction treaty, and first laid the groundwork for a peaceful, rather than violent, end to the Cold War.

Domestically, Nixon established the EPA and OSHA, despite criticism from his own party. He aggressively fought to continue the process of desegregation despite concerns that it would cost him much of the South in his re-election. He endorsed the Equal Rights Amendment and promoted something close to universal healthcare, yet many of his contemporaries and the protesters of the time continued to dismiss him as a reactionary.

The coverups that would eventually bring Nixon down were almost mild by today’s political standards. Far from the ruthless and cynical autocrat that he has been painted as, those close to Nixon have described vividly the deep anguish, self-doubt, and intense humility he privately felt all his life.

Indeed, I would take Nixon over any of the so-called “leaders” we have in Washington today, from either party. Nixon was among the greatest presidents in modern history. God bless Richard Nixon.

That means you are too slow to catch up with Amazon’s outgrowing speed. It is no longer an online retailer, selling stuff and making Kindles. After launched Amazon Web Service (AWS) in 2006, Amazon becomes an innovation which runs a multi-billion-dollar business in the technology industry.

So this year’s Amazon best gift is

AWS re: Invent Keynotes live Streaming

Las Vegas, NV|Wednesday, November 28th and Thursday, November 29th

Three Keynotes speakers, Andy Jassy, SVP of Amazon Web Services, Werner Vogels, CTO of Amazon.com and Jeff Bezos, Founder and CEO of Amazon.com will join in the live. Last year, Andy Jassy raised a perspective that AWS would be bigger than the whole Amazon store. This time, he plans to prove it by introducing the AWS‘s latest cloud product, and explaining AWS‘s newest business model. Werner Vogels, the CTO of Amazon.com will have a fireside chat with Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon.com, and discuss the strategies for start-up companies to get to market more quickly and inexpensively by using AWS’s unmatched infrastructure technology platform.

This summer, I moved to San Francisco after graduating from George Washington University. I took 3 days to settle down, and suddenly realized that I didn’t have any plan with anyone at the weekend. It sounds awkward for me to send out couple texts to my colleagues and ask for their Friday night plan. Also, I knew a lot of fun tech events in town, but I can never register in any of them timely.

I figured out the problem is those tech organizers don’t have time or platforms to market their events. So the only way to join in these events is through Facebook. Unfortunately, there are hundreds of public events popping up in one second which makes it impossible to find an appropriate one without my friends’ invitations.

Finally, my colleague “General” (She is the Superwoman in my office) recommended ukoot to me. Basically, it explores the tech events all around the U.S.and maps out the top 100 events by location at one time. I can choose my best and mark them as the favorite. I also downloaded the App that enables me to check the events 24/7 and to make sure that I don’t miss any of them. Satisfied!!!

During Hurricane Sandy, many people keep working remotely by making conference calls. However, getting everyone on the call is a difficult start. Callers often get confused when tailor attendees’ names to their phone numbers. Speek solves the problem by providing a web-based conferencing platform without memorizing a number.

It is super easy to use Speek to set up a conference call. Firstly, go to the Speek website and pick a URL for your call, like http://www.speek.com/uKoot. Then email this link to all the attendees you want to contact with. Once the attendee clicks the link and input his/her phone number, they will immediately join in your call. Meanwhile by cooperating with Dropbox, Speek allows you to send text messages and share files during the call. You can also have a custom dashboard that manages your account and hides your message when someone else wants to start a conference call using your link, and don’t forget the most amazing point: It is free!!!
